I have enjoyed all 3 of the volumes in “Essential Calculus Based Physics” so far, and for simple reasons. These texts truly do live up to their titles by introducing very *essential* ideas in physics. They bring all of the important ideas together, lay down the fundamental conceptual background information regarding the topic, and provide many examples to get you doing the work yourself. The concepts can be very clear for those who are accustomed to the “do it yourself” style books, but remember that this is a study guide and not a complete textbook, so that style of text should not come as a surprise to those who are diving in with little to no familiarity with both the mathematics and the actual physics. The diagrams often times will show vectors and/or are labeled strictly mathematically, so the conceptual representation is generally favored by the student with decent familiarity. The only thing I might be able to identify as a negative (for as insignificant as it may be), is that the answers to the problems are not written in with the problem itself, and instead you will have to flip to the back to find each individual answer. Nonetheless these books seem underrated and deserve more recognition.

I am interested in music theory and acoustics that I wanted to brush up on wave theory. I was so intrigued by the format and the presentation, I bought all three books in the series!

As someone who has found both learning physics and calculus very challenging, I am finding all of the books by Chris McMullen to be very helpful. While these are not a replacement for good text books on these subjects, they are a tremendous supplement. I am also enjoying comparing the sections in the physics books for solving problems for uniform motion vs. the same type of problem in “motion with calculus” to be a wonderful place to practice my elementary skills in calculus with real problems. This not only helps to cement my knowledge of physics, but also to help me better think about how I can apply calculus to these applications. These books, including the Physics Study Guide Workbook by Chris McMullen help a slow learner like myself to learn / review / and appreciate something that I struggled to just pass as courses in college. If I were a teacher of these courses in most colleges or in high school as AP courses, I would insist that students obtain Chris’s books for these physics and pre-calculus subjects as necessary supplements to what they would be attempting to learn in school. I also believe that there are many students like myself for whom these courses are very difficult, and I wonder how many ordinary have altered their majors to avoid these courses just because they believed them to be too difficult pass. Doing that is a real shame. What Chris’s books like Physics Study Guide Workbook does is to make these subjects more accessible to ordinary students. What I have said here, also applies to Chris’s books for calculus, and all of the pre-calculus subjects he covers as well. I wish I had these books available to me when I was in college!

I just finished taking the 2020 AP physics c: e&m test and I used this amazing book to study for it. It is great for reviewing a bunch of the topics and the exercises are great! Honestly, without it I don’t think I would have understood electricity and magnetism this well, I highly recommend buying it (its also only about $20 which is a great price for the amount of content contained).

As a retired engineer, one day, I decided to review Elementary and Advanced Calculus, Differential Equations (Partial and Linear) and the Laws and Principles of Physics. I found my path to review Math and Physics combined in three well written, thought provoking, Volumes. If you have the time, desire, plenty of paper, and patience, DR. Chris McMullen’s three volumes are worthy of review.

This workbook is perfect if you’re struggling to grasp the wording or teaching of a regular textbook. It clearly lays out everything you need to know and goes into amazing detail. Every problem has the answer, not just the odd numbers, and on top of that they have all the steps included in those answer. I’d highly suggest this workbook, it has everything you need for physics and it’s a great price.

There is no way to really learn Physics without coming to grips with the math and the only way to come to grips with the math is to do problems. I was having some trouble understanding some of the concepts and problems in my 1500 page Physics book so my advisor recommended this resource. It’s phenomenal! It gives short and concise descriptions of the concepts, walks through several example problems by showing all steps, and then gives you several problems to do yourself. If you get stuck, the step-by-step solutions to your problems are in the back of the book. If you really want to understand the math problems in your calculus-based Physics course then this resource (and the other two volumes) is for you!

I was planning to start tutoring and I needed a refresher. Also I need a study plan. This book was perfect.

    16. ROF (verified owner)

Very well done. Shows how to do things from the start. Lays down the foundations and builds from that. Excellent examples and problems that explain everything clearly. Its great to be able to understand and learn. Highly recommended.

I’ll put it like this; DR.Chris McMullen, went to the store and got groceries, came to my house *PERSONALLY*, cooked and then chopped up and FED ME THE INFORMATION. If you get any physics book that works you through equations THIS IS THE ONE OK. I’ve never understood physics like I understand after working through this book. Excellent!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

    18. Nicholas M (verified owner)

You learn physics by doing physics and this work book manages to blend theory with a rich selection of problems designed to steer the student through the difficult E&M syllabus.
I also have the companion workbooks for Physics I- both the algebra based and calculus based versions, single and multivariable calculus and differential equations. They are all excellent and very readable.
