As a public middle school teacher who has suffered through some of the worst educational “reforms” to curricula during the last few decades, I have been seriously frustrated by the latest Common Core “improvements” which are anything but. The textbooks I am given are an embarrassment with anorexic explanations, little practice for the students and insulting, overly scripted extra pages in the teaching editions that make them three times the size of the OED! In an effort to find a basic compendium of good, road tested problems to use to beef up the sad resources I was given, I came across these. They are not flashy, but I have so appreciated being able to use the exercises quickly and easily without having to come up with my own or carry around another mammoth textbook The content is also distilled down to the most important concepts necessary for success in Algebra, leaving statistics, probability, and transformational geometry for another life. I only hope that the next iteration of curricula decides to get back to the basics of arithmetic as the foundation for everything else!!

So, I’ve gotten books like this before for my son to practice his math, but this one shocked me. When I went to School many decades ago, I would complain about how they would give me one perfect example for the kind of problems they wanted me to work out, but then there were exceptions and other types of problems that required a little different solution to work out. This book shows you an example and how to solve step by step every type of problem you will encounter in the worksheet. The examples are right at the beginning of the worksheet. It’s not a textbook it’s a Tutorial Book. It gets right to the point and shows you exactly how to work out every type of problem you will encounter in the practice sheet. No need to guess or figure it all out like a high school textbook. Every math textbook should be written like this.

I was struggling to teach my 10 year old son about equations. I’m preparing him for math competitions and such. I was printing out random worksheets online. It was a struggle teaching him the concepts. Now this book was a total game changer. It’s so much easier to teach him. His math knowledge is exceeding anyone 2 years older than him, and only getting better. This book makes it so easy.

There are brief, useful examples for each concept. There are references to previous examples when things get more complicated. Every single question is given an answer and explanation, and there are lots of questions. I found that some other books go too much into theory and explanation, which is hard for a kid to digest. This way is better. The author really thought about the best way to present the topics and explain them concisely. I ended up buying two of his other math books, and my son is breezing through them.

I’ve tried other brands, like Spectrum. This one is better. It’s easier to understand and follow, which is the goal. I wish Chris McCullen wrote something on probability; I got something else for that, and it’s a bit of a slog and requires more of a hands-on approach from me to train my son.

PROs: Answers in the back of the book. Tons of practice. Adequate examples. Not confusing. Thorough. Concepts built in an organized ascending order. No frills- just the drills! Great for adults like me who need gentle reviews. Great for students who may have a need for systematic instruction in prealgebra. Many students have gaps in instruction and just need continuity to bridge the gaps. Parents need the review as well. Use the answer key in the back of the book to assist in learning.
CONs: It’s drill. Drill. Drill. No frills, just the drills. Sometimes I skipped drills or just did odd numbers… Because there are a LOT of practice and it gets to be too many problems that are similar. And no illustration or jokes to make it a bit easier for students to keep motivated.

Overall you and your student will learn that prealgebra forward and backward.

This work book is going to be the biggest help to keep my child practicing all summer so that he doesn’t regress over the break. It is a GREAT value for the cost and covers the material well.

One major issue with schooling today is the enormous amount of AI generated math questions. They make no sense are not solvable or cannot give you the information you need to understand how to solve them. This book is helping my 12 year old address some of the issues we have had for several years. He asks why the math in school is not like this. He finds it a lot easier to understand and follow. It is well written in a logical, progressive manner. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson. Highly recommend.

Useful for kids to catch up.
      Easily understandable.
Would buy from the same author. For continuity on how lessons are taught.

I thought it would be good to keep my brain sharp since as most adults, I am no longer in school. I realized I’ve all but forgotten most basics so I thought I would start at the beginning as a refresher and to make it less intimidating. This book is incredibly well made. Well, the physical book is fine. The pages hold up to my highlights and scribbles and eraser marks, but also the content is wonderful. Dr. McMullen is so concise in his directions, I feel like I understand better than I did when I learned it the first time. Also there’s not much to read. It is completely shaved down to what you absolutely need to know to do the following equations which makes it more digestible. I think a child could start here. I think an adult who has never learned this could start here. I always considered myself bad at math but it turns out when I am taught this format, I get it! Sure, my dyslexia does me in on a few equations but at least I understand the content now. I feel like it’s finally penetrating my brain in a positive way. I really believe that humans should never stop learning and trying to expand their interests and knowledge. There is so much to know and learn and if you want to improve in an area- go for it! This book makes this really easy in my opinion. My goal is to work up through all of Dr. McMullen’s books and surpass the math level I was limited to in high school and college. This book is just really great. That’s just my opinion but I’d suggest them to anyone.

This book is wonderful. I am in my late 40s, relearning higher math. I decided to go back to the basics because as a kid, I didn’t get the best foundation. So I struggled all the way through pre-calc. This book reminded me of things I used to know and taught me things I didn’t ever know. The practice problems are fully fleshed out in the answer section, step by step. If you are an intuitive person, you can learn easily from this book. But I would also pair it with the BrainQuest study guides and some YouTube videos to follow up on concepts you might not fully understand from this book. The book is concise with no filler material. The only improvement I would suggest is to make it spiral bound so it would lay flat to write in it. I can’t wait to check out the other books I’ve purchased from Dr. McMullen. And I plan to purchase more as I move up in my math relearning journey. Textbooks didn’t do it for me. This does. Thanks doc!

Last time I studied anything in a classroom was in 1968. This book was much more conducive to learning
than any books or teachers in my high school. It actually appeals to one’s sense of logic!

I purchased this book as a supplement for my high school math classes, and it is very well done. It is extremely clear, straightforward, has clean layout, and many practice problems for each topic without any unnecessary themes, comments, pictures, etc. Thank you Chris McMullen.

Not alot of “cool graphics” and jazzy colors. In fact, there are none. But the explanations are clear, the examples are appropriate and the answer key usually gives a brief explanation about how the answer was achieved.

Using this book to teach the first part of GED math. It is an extremely helpful resource. Very good, short explanations of many topics followed by loads of exercises.

    14. Scott Krumwiede (verified owner)

Great book for learning or relearn what you may have forgotten, I enjoy doing math problems to keep my mind busy and learn what I don’t know!!
