A comprehensive update of the leading algorithms text, with new material on matchings in bipartite graphs, online algorithms, machine learning, and other topics.

Some books on algorithms are rigorous but incomplete; others cover masses of material but lack rigor. Introduction to Algorithms uniquely combines rigor and comprehensiveness. It covers a broad range of algorithms in depth, yet makes their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers, with self-contained chapters and algorithms in pseudocode. Since the publication of the first edition, Introduction to Algorithms has become the leading algorithms text in universities worldwide as well as the standard reference for professionals. This fourth edition has been updated throughout.

    New for the fourth edition

    • New chapters on matchings in bipartite graphs, online algorithms, and machine learning
    • New material on topics including solving recurrence equations, hash tables, potential functions, and suffix arrays
    • 140 new exercises and 22 new problems
    • Reader feedback–informed improvements to old problems
    • Clearer, more personal, and gender-neutral writing style
    • Color added to improve visual presentation
    • Notes, bibliography, and index updated to reflect developments in the field
    • Website with new supplementary material

Warning: Avoid counterfeit copies of Introduction to Algorithms by buying only from reputable retailers. Counterfeit and pirated copies are incomplete and contain errors.

In a nutshell, this book is fantastic but it’s a bit academically oriented and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for most professionals as a “go to” algorithms book.

There’s “arguably” barely any changes since the previous edition so you almost might as well save yourself a buck on that end.

This book is so thick, so the binding should be even more strong at-least for hard copies.

    3. Bob Sagat (verified owner)

The book breaks apart too easily- I wish they included an ebook w/ purchase.

    4. Neil Erdman (verified owner)

This is a fantastic reference, and I’ve owned both the second and fourth edition, but the paper quality and binding is still terrible.

I would instantly buy this book again if they separated it into two volumes, and used better quality.

When using it as a reference I’m usually in either front half, or back half, anyway. It would be so much nicer to grab off the shelf and use as two separate volumes.

TLDR: Get 3rd edition if you are buying it to pass a course: most Data Stuctures and Algorithms curricula are built on 3rd edition and it is cheaper to get as there lots of second-hand copies that are almost as good as new. Get 4th edition if you are buying this as a reference book which will be in your library for years.

They are mostly quite similar, but there were a reasonable number changes with regards to fixing errors and the style of writing. If you do not have time to check the errata for 3rd edition, most of the errors have been fixed in 4th edition. Moreover, all the material for 3rd edition that is now gone (as it was not as useful as it could be to an average reader) is available at the website, which means you can always look it up. Some new topics have been added, such as Machine Learning, but I think that you would buy a specialized book for ML in case you wanted to study the topic in depth. Still, it is (somewhat) useful if you are doing a quick brush-up before the interview – you have basic algorithms for ML (look up the index of the textbook before buying so that you know what is included) and your typical DSA interview topics in the same place.

Giving it 4 stars as I’d prefer the 3rd edition due to the price difference – I paid CAD 160 for the 4th edition as a gift, and only CAD 63 for a second-hand 3rd edition for my algorithms course: 100 dollar difference for a student is quite a lot, to be honest. Although I’d prefer to have my textbook without any errors and in color, I’d rather look up the errata rather than pay 100 dollars more. I think that by the time I get a job, the price will decrease and will be able to get a much better offer on 4th edition in case I want it.

Very useful learning material for programmers and CS
